Possible Free Trade Agreement with the European Union (EU)

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has begun consultations with Australian industry bodies seeking views on the merits of opening discussions with the European Union (EU) on a possible Free Trade Agreement.

Tony Greenwood from Shire Legal was invited to attend a meeting with the CEO of the Australian Federation of International Forwarders Ltd (AFIF) and representatives of DFAT – Europe Trade Section, Europe Division. The purpose of the meeting was so that DFAT could canvass the views of AFIF to this proposal.

DFAT expects to conclude its industry wide consultations towards the end of 2014 and will then make recommendations to the Minister maybe in early 2015, on the issue whether Australia should commence negotiations with the EU.

Should the government decide to open up negotiations, it will seek formal submissions from industry bodies at that time.
